buggirl:

Elodes Darkling Beetle that I discovered in a wood pile.  I love his rectangular head.  These are also called Stink Beetles (not to be confused w/ stink bugs) because they emit a foul odor out their bums to deter predation.  They also will stand on their heads to maximize the odor which is why some people call them acrobat beetles.  Many species of Darkling Beetle can be kept as pets, as they are easy to care for and long lived.  I’ve had many Ironclad Beetles as pets.  They lived for years, ate apples, and had sex all day.  I wonder which was the secret to their longevity…

LEGIT TRUE FAX
I am the TA (and by TA I mean I am basically in charge of the class- the instructor is very “hands off”) for an introduction to entomology course for non majors. This class is hell. Let me give you an example:
We took the students out to a very nice stream to collect aquatic insects (awesome, right?). On the trip we found a LOT of darkling beetles sunning themselves on a rock. I mean there were like 20, and they were HUGE. it was SO AWESOME.
So I popped one in a sample jar and dropped it off where the students were sorting things and looking under rocks
I came back a few minutes later and several of them were trying to convince one of the others to eat the darkling beetle.
these are college students
and then on the drive back to campus the tire on the van blew out and several of the students tried to WALK back to campus…20 miles away…
this class you guys
but also darkling beetles!
